The beauty and hairdressing industry would not be what it is today without the groundbreaking contributions of Black innovators. Their creativity, resilience, and dedication have transformed hair care and beauty standards across generations. This Black History Month, we honor the trailblazers who have shaped the industry.

Madam C.J. Walker (1867–1919): Pioneering Hair Care Entrepreneur

Madam C.J. Walker was the first Black female self-made millionaire in the United States. She developed a line of hair care products specifically for Black hair, including the famous "Walker Method"—a system of scalp preparation, pomade application, and hot comb styling. Her innovation provided Black women with solutions tailored to their hair needs and created opportunities for thousands of women in business. (Source: Bundles, A'Lelia. Garrett A. Morgan (1877–1963): The Inventor of the Modern Relaxer

Garrett A. Morgan, known for inventing the traffic signal and gas mask, also revolutionized hair care with the creation of the first chemical hair relaxer. This discovery led to the development of hair straightening products that gave people more styling options. (Source: Hughes, Langston. "Famous American Inventors." Dover Publications, 2012.)

Christina Jenkins (1920–2003): The Weave Queen

Christina Jenkins revolutionized hair extensions by inventing the sew-in weave in the 1950s. This technique provided a longer-lasting and more natural-looking alternative to traditional wigs and helped pave the way for today’s advanced hair extension methods. Dr. Willie L. Morrow (1940–2022): The Creator of the Afro Pick

Dr. Willie L. Morrow designed the modern Afro pick, a staple tool in hair care. His innovations extended beyond combs; he was also a barber, inventor, and advocate for natural hair care, ensuring Black hair was celebrated rather than hidden. (Source: Morrow, Willie L. "400 Years Without a Comb." Black Publishers of San Diego, 1973.)

Kiyah Wright (Born 1970s): The Celebrity Stylist Behind Iconic Looks

Kiyah Wright is a two-time Emmy-winning hairstylist whose work has graced celebrities like Tyra Banks, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Hudson. She has been a leader in creating trends for textured hair, proving that natural Black hair can be both high fashion and mainstream. (Source: Wright, Kiyah. The Future of Black Beauty Innovation

Today, Black innovators continue to push boundaries in the beauty space. Companies like The Lip Bar and Mented Cosmetics are redefining makeup with shades that cater to deeper skin tones. Entrepreneurs like Fesa Nu are revolutionizing the industry with inclusive products and spaces that celebrate all hair types. (Source: Byrd, Ayana D., and Lori L. Tharps. As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize that Black contributions to beauty and hairdressing are ongoing. Their innovations, artistry, and resilience have shaped the way we see and celebrate beauty today—and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
