In the beauty industry, we’re often focused on the artistry of hair and how it can boost confidence, express individuality, and even be a form of self-care. But for many, visiting a salon is more than just a beauty experience; it can be an overwhelming sensory experience. For individuals with sensory sensitivities, including those on the autism spectrum, those with ADHD, or those who simply find certain sensations or environments challenging, the typical salon visit can be stressful.
At Fresh Rayne Salon, we want everyone to feel comfortable, respected, and fully able to enjoy their time with us. That’s why I made the decision to become certified as a sensory-safe stylist and create a salon environment that’s inclusive and understanding of all sensory needs.
What Does It Mean to Be a Sensory Safe Salon?
A sensory-safe salon is designed to create an experience that respects and accommodates various sensory needs. This includes minimizing triggers like loud noises, bright lights, strong smells, and sudden physical touch. It’s about recognizing that a “standard” salon setting might not be ideal for everyone and adjusting the environment to make it accessible and welcoming.
Some of the sensory-friendly adaptations we’ve made include:
• Quiet Spaces: Offering areas with less background noise or providing earplugs and headphones.
• Dimmed Lighting: Using softer lighting for clients who may be sensitive to bright lights.
• Predictable Environment: Letting clients know what to expect during their appointment, which can help minimize anxiety.
• Communication Options: Giving clients the choice to communicate their preferences on everything from touch to background music before we start.
Why I Became a Certified Sensory Safe Stylist
I became certified because I believe everyone deserves to enjoy their salon experience. Through my training, I learned how to create a space where clients can feel at ease, empowered, and respected, regardless of sensory sensitivities. This certification has deepened my understanding of sensory processing challenges and taught me strategies to help each client feel as comfortable as possible.
I want Fresh Rayne Salon to be a place where clients look forward to their visits, knowing they’re in a supportive environment. It’s more than just making hair beautiful; it’s about creating positive, accessible experiences.
I got an amazing training with The Sensory Safe Solution. Ms. Nina was an amazing instructor and she care about making the salon a more inclusive place. They have a great organization and to be honest, I might explore more opportunities with them.
The Positive Impact
Since becoming a sensory-safe stylist, I’ve seen firsthand how small adjustments can make a world of difference. Clients who once felt nervous or overwhelmed by the typical salon atmosphere can now come in, relax, and actually enjoy the experience. And their relief and happiness—knowing they can trust us with their unique needs—is the best part.
I’m proud to offer this inclusive, thoughtful approach and grateful for the clients who have trusted us on their journey. If you or someone you know has sensory sensitivities, please know that Fresh Rayne Salon is here to meet you where you are and provide an experience that’s all about you.
Thank you for being a part of this journey to make the beauty industry more inclusive, one appointment at a time.
